Maria Theresia und Schloss Schönbrunn. Familienresidenz und politische Bühne einer außergewöhnlichen Regentin

2006-2007

The first and last female Habsburg monarch, Maria Theresia (1717 - 1780) was not only a dauntless leader when her dominion was under external military threat, but also an enlightened ruler who paved the way for Austria’s modernization by carrying out major constitutional, administrative, financial, educational and religious reforms.

This exhibition spotlighted the cultural splendor of 18th-century Vienna by taking a close look at Maria Theresia’s life, reign, family and court life at her magnificent residence, Schönbrunn Palace, which is today a World Heritage Site. Exhibits included important paintings, decorative art objects, items of clothing, jewelry and historical materials from Schönbrunn Palace as well as the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and other collections.
